Allah as Al-Barr (The Source of All Goodness)
While my daughter was at class and I had a good one and a half hours of ‘me’ time, I decided to walk to a café nearby for a cuppa. Halfway there, it began to drizzle. I had to stop at the crossing as the traffic light was not in my favour.
Then it got heavier.
I just needed to get to the void deck of the block of flats across the road for shelter. But that would take a good 2 minutes for the man on the traffic light to turn green.
I took that few minutes thinking of how this will soon be a norm as we are scrapping the car in less than a month; how I am going to miss having the car with me all the time, driving around running errands like petrol is free, not having to worry much about rain or bringing along an umbrella; how I will need to retrieve my bigger bag from storage to fit my water bottle and other knick-knacks I will bring along for security.
Alhamdulillah ala kulli haal.
Then I heard a honk.
There goes my thoughts, abruptly halted.
It was from a lorry, loaded with stacks of cardboard to the brim. The Chinese driver wound down the window halfway and held his umbrella through the opening.
I was surprised at his gesture. I didn’t want to accept his offer initially, thinking about how I was going to return it and convinced that I can make it to the other side without getting drenched.
But he persisted.
I didn’t want to hold him back so I took it anyway and he smiled and gestured with his hand to acknowledge my gratitude. At that point, the light turned green and he drove away.
I was still standing at the traffic light, too stunned to move. I trailed his lorry until it went out of sight, making du’a that Allah alBarr grant this man Taufiq and Hidayah and help him out of his trials and tribulations and ease all of his affairs just as he did mine.
It began to pour and I felt certain of the manifestation of my du’a.

I crossed the road with eyes flowing with tears as heavy as the downpour. Allah Al-Barr, the Most Benevolent, the Source of all Goodness, inspired it in his heart to offer me the umbrella at a time I’m most in need.
He arranged for the lorry to perfectly stop at the right spot at the right time. Allah ﷻ never never disappoints. And He is always there for us.
HasbunaAllahu wa ni’mal wakeel.
I shudder at the thought of not being under the shade of the One whose shade is the only shelter we have on the Day of Judgement. At that moment, will I be handed an ‘umbrella’ or will I be left to drown in the rain of perspiration from the heat of the sun that is just above our heads?
Oh Allah, ya Mawla, ya Hafizh, help us all. To stay in the shade of always being in Your pleasure and shelter us from all harm that may bring us to Your wrath.
